What does it mean to be white in a society that proclaims race meaningless, yet is deeply divided by race? In the face of pervasive racial inequality and segregation, most white people cannot answer that question. In the second edition of this seminal text, Robin DiAngelo reveals the factors that make this question so difficult: mis-education about what racism is; ideologies such as individualism and colorblindness; segregation; and the belief that to be complicit in racism is to be an immoral person. These factors contribute to what she terms white racial illiteracy. Speaking as a white person to other white people, DiAngelo clearly and compellingly takes readers through an analysis of white socialization. Weaving research, analysis, stories, images, and familiar examples, she provides the framework needed to develop white racial literacy. She describes how race shapes the lives of white people, explains what makes racism so hard to see, identifies common white racial patterns, and speaks back to popular narratives that work to deny racism. Written as an accessible overview on white identity from an anti-racist framework, What Does It Mean to Be White? is an invaluable resource for members of diversity and anti-racism programs and study groups, and students of sociology, psychology, education, and other disciplines. This revised edition features two new chapters, including one on DiAngelo’s influential concept of white fragility. Written to be accessible both within and without academia, this revised edition also features discussion questions, an index, and a glossary.

The author has a fantastic ability to convey important points concisely and eloquently. She coined the term "white fragility" that is now commonly and appropriately used in discussions of antiracist activism. Though I recognized some of the white privilege that I benefit from in our racially divided society, I learned a lot from this book. The author is a white woman writing to a white audience (though anyone can benefit from this book) and much of the book accurately discusses the many ways that whites are willfully blind to the privileges of whiteness and the resultant harm this creates in American society. Yet she frequently reminds us that the culture of racism is something we inherited, and encourages whites to not hide behind guilt or defensiveness and instead to get involved and actively work for real change.
If you're completely unfamiliar with the idea of whiteness and racism and how whiteness affords privilege and a certain kind of ease in American (and much of Western) society, this is a good primer with thoughtful questions to encourage self-interrogation and growth. If you're familiar at all with said concepts, though, it's a very expensive refresher that goes deep but doesn't really cover any new ground.
This incredibly rich, well-researched book disturbed me deeply during the weeks it took me to read and process. As it should have and continues to. It lays bare the dark myths and delusions that condition us all to accept and collude with institutional racism in the United States today, whether we benefit or suffer from it, which we all do eventually. The book also liberated me in completely unexpected ways. Gird your loins if you decide to take it on and be kind to yourself while you read it, as the white man's world has not been kind to you. You will need kindness to get to the other side with any prospect of hope. It's up to white people to interrupt racism, which we cannot do until we confront what it is and how it operates within and through us.
Easy to read if you can suspend judgments of yourself and others -- points are well made and easy to understand. IMO it require slow reading to fully take in the messages. The points about Individualism and The Binary preventing us from working to reduce racism were especially educational for me.Have recommended this book to a number of friends who claim multi-cultural openness and they are humbled by what they learn from this book.
Very thought provoking for this white male and the study group at my mostly-white Unitarian church.
I am a white woman and this book has been so helpful in increasing my awareness of internalized racism and changing the way I think and interact with others. It is very accessible in concepts and is a must read for white folks!
Great book - easily accessible to readers. I highly recommend this to everyone who wants to be more aware of how whiteness works to historically and currently empower white people and disempower others. If you're working on your "woke" level - this is a great choice!
Everyone needs to read this book. I've taught social justice classes on the university level for years and had so many aha moments while reading this. It is truly a book that should be required reading.
